Sunday 10th July saw the 2005 Eastern Counties cup finals played at Bushfields sports centre, Peterborough. Teams from all over the region were present and during the eight hour tournament exhibited to the 150 spectators some exciting and sometimes unpredictable roller hockey.

The Ivan Cook under 9 championship trophy concluded in a drew after the finalists Kings Lynn and Peterborough played extra time. Letchworth took two trophies on the day beating Bury Juniors 3 – 1 and Kings Lynn 2 – 1 at the Senior 2 level. Bury put one in the eye of Letchworth at the Senior 1 game beating them 5 – 1 with a team stuck down with injuries and work commitments.

After all that has been said Kings Lynn took the day coming away with four trophies, beating Cambridge 7 – 4 at Under 11 level, Cambridge again 4 – 3 at Minor level, Bury 6 – 2 at Intermediates and Bury again 3 – 2 at Schoolboy level. The Kings Lynn club under the leadership of Chris Kay has become a force to be reckoned with not only in the Eastern region but nationally too.

Letchworth National Senior Cup Winners

Filed under: UK National News — Gordon Morrison @ 26 June 2005

After a slow start Letchworth were victorious over 2005 Premier league winners Bury. The Suffolk team were ahead 3-1 in the first half but Letchworth pulled back and forced the game to extra time. The extra five minutes each way was still not enough time to sort out a winner from the two teams so it was down the goalkeepers to make the final call, Ben Wells (Bury) and Ashley Pay (Letchworth) had the game resting on their shoulders at the penalty shoot out, Ashley Pay (man of the match) was on form and Letchworth took the Senior Cup as the result of this entertaining and sometimes breathtaking game.
